The Place In Trinity Bay Where I was Born

Situated in a sheltered harbor along the shores of Trinity Bay Newfoundland and Labrador, Champney's West (known locally as simply the island) is a fishing village steeped in history and tradition. It's also the place where I was born and raised. Champney's clings to the rocks of the Trinity Bight area, a popular stop along the discovery trail.

This fishing out port, like many others in the province, was effected by declining fish stocks and closure of the cod fishery. Today there still are commercial fishermen plying the waters around Champney's but the numbers of fisher persons has dwindled compared to days of old. Although things have changed, the way of life continues on, hardy souls bring home their catch and still find time for a friendly chat with visitors. Champney's West is a place where you can make friends with ease and feel at home no matter how long you visit or if you choose to stay.

If you are looking for breathtaking natural scenery, the rocky shores, fishing structures, boats, coves and clear open waters around Champney's will provide you with endless hours of viewing pleasure. If it's a great picture you wish or a scene for landscape painting, finding a place that's right for you, will not take long.

Fox Island rising more than 35 meters above sea level is the site of a historical fortification dating date to the Queen Ann's War of 1702 - 13. The local Community Recreation Committee and Development Association have developed a hiking trail from the town site to Fox Island. This trail offers spectacular scenery and the opportunity to observe local plants, rock formations, seabirds, whales and a mixture of other unspoiled features. At the height of the trail you can explore the area and remains of old fortifications. This is also a great place to watch for whales. Parts of this trail transverse high sea cliffs and maintaining a safety first attitude is a must when hiking. Be sure to stop and talk with the local people, they are friendly, witty and down to earth. Fox Island Hiking Trail

Champney's West is a place where perceptions meet reality. The Community lives long on tradition and friendship. It's a place to lose perceptions or find new ones, a place where spirited and honest interaction can come to life. A place to call home.

The ability to face the world with good nature and humor is not lost on the island. Every year since 1993, the local people of Champney's West have hosted a "concert". A show of talent and plain down to the earth fun. That concert has now grown into a 3 day event drawing crowds from far and wide. The "ones" that get to see the concert can't help but "sound off" to everyone about the hilarious skits off the cuff humor and Newfoundland Music that the show provides. The Island Concert takes you back to a time in outport life when getting together meant that the whole town got involved to make the annual "laugh, Scoff and Scuff" a memorable affair. The concert raises money for community improvement projects, helping to make sure that future generations have the chance to experience a slice of tradition. There is a video of the concert available at Tidespoint.Com
