Fishing Fun In Manitoba Canada


The province of Manitoba, located in the Heart of Canada, stretches from the Canada - USA boarder all the way north to the Artic Tundra. A Province well known for Agriculture food production, it is also home to vast areas of wilderness and lakes, populated by many species of animals and fish. I love to talk about this province and the fun that can be had exploring and fishing here. This is a brief overview of "Natural Manitoba" that includes links to government, travel, tourism and fishing resource websites. 

Manitoba Fish and Wildlife

Two-thirds of Canada's 500-plus species of birds come to Manitoba. Drawn to the more than 100,000 lakes and countless, steams, rivers and marshes. Manitoba is a well known wildlife-watching destination.

The provinces diverse habitats of sub-Arctic tundra, broad plains, forests and parklands are home to an equally diverse group of animals including polar bears, beluga whales, caribou, elk, moose, black bears and more. Splendid and plentiful parklands protect marshes and natural habitat. 

The world class Oak Hammock Marsh (Ducks unlimited) is located in the Interlake region. Oak Hammock is a reserve for geese, ducks, other birds and animals. Thousands of people from around the world visit the marsh annually.

Recreational Fishing Regulations

The general opening of the 2008 angling season will start in May. The province publishes an annual anglers guide the 2007 (PDF) version is available online at this link Recreational fishing in Manitoba is governed by regulations made under The Provincial Fisheries Act and the Fisheries Act of Canada. Regulations other than those under the Fisheries Act may also apply while fishing, e.g. regarding the use of boats, motors, vehicles, etc

Anglers must use barbless hooks. A barbless hook is a hook with no barbs or barbs that have been compressed to be in complete contact with the shaft of the hook. Barbless hooks may have barbs on the shank for holding bait. When you are fishing, the hooks attached to all your lines, whether in use or not, must be barbless. Commercial Fishing In Manitoba

Commercial fishing is also a valued industry in Manitoba. For over 100 years, Manitoba families have been commercially harvesting fish. The majority of commercial fish production comes from Lake Winnipeg and Lake Manitoba, but several smaller lakes are also fished.
